August saw our annual walking club expedition to the Peak District - what started as a planned gentle walk along the Pennine Way turned into an unexpected adventure up Mam Tor! It was a beautiful day in Edale and our walking clubs took on the challenge together, with lots of people meeting for the very first time.
It was lovely to watch friendships begin to form almost as soon as we boarded the train with strangers chatting, sharing stories and quickly becoming walking buddies. By the time we reached Edale, everyone felt like part of one big group and the support and encouragement throughout the day were truly wonderful.
As the walk became a little more challenging everyone looked out for one another, encouraged each other along and made sure nobody felt they were tackling it alone. A special mention goes to 76 year old Margaret who wasn’t sure she could do it but found herself standing proudly at the top of Mam Tor - what an amazing achievement!
And perhaps the best part was seeing those new friendships continue on the journey home with people making plans and promising to keep in touch. It was a beautiful reminder that MileShyClub is about so much more than walking. It’s about connection, confidence, community and doing something you weren’t quite sure you could do, surrounded by people who believe in you.
